About me
Rob Vanspauwen (1978) is a Belgian musician based in Bilzen.
He works as a guitarist and double bassist, with a background rooted in jazz, improvised music, and ensemble-based work. He studied jazz guitar at the Conservatorium Maastricht with Jan Formannoy and later completed a Master’s degree in jazz double bass under the guidance of Philippe Aerts. His musical practice is shaped by an attention to listening, space, and the subtle dynamics that emerge between people.
Between 2006 and 2015, Rob also worked as a freelance sound engineer and producer at Artsound Recording Studio, recording both national and international artists. While his current focus lies primarily on playing, composing, and teaching, this studio experience continues to inform how he approaches sound, structure, and detail.
Alongside music, Rob works as a portrait photographer. His style is shaped by years of working closely with people, translating naturally into a quiet, editorial approach to portraiture, focusing on presence, and the subtle cues that define how someone is perceived.
Rob teaches guitar, double bass, electric bass, ensemble, and music theory at Pentagoon Academie in Tongeren.
He plays a Thomas Martin double bass, maintained by luthier Jan Knooren, and plays Acoustic Image amps provided by Philippe Curatalo.
